Suffering from poor circulation, constipation, depression, fatigue, thinning bones, weight gain, or memory loss?  These are just a few things that exercise can improve.  The newest research shows the surest way to build brain power is by exercising.  I know you are busy and you think that you do not need to exercise because you are "running around all day", but the truth is, that is not exercising.  Exercise is putting aside time to focus only on moving your body.  If you do not know how, start to walk, then seek out a friend who likes to exercise, and exercise with them.  I always feel that you cannot push yourself like a personal trainer can, so I am a huge advocate of hiring a personal trainer.  After a couple of sessions, you will start to see the changes in your body, your sleep, your anxiety levels and after a few months you will see it on your blood work.  So start moving! Below is a great article, please read it.

Unlike conventional medicine, which focuses on attempting to treat disease, symptoms and pain once it occurs, Doctors of chiropractic emphasize improving your health in an effort to reduce the risk of pain and illness in the first place. Most people would rather be healthy and avoid illness, if they could. What does this have to do with prenatal chiropractic? Making sure the spine is adjusted through these astounding changes that the body makes in the amazingly short nine months of pregnancy is vital to carrying well, an easier delivery, and quicker recovery post natal. Most chiropractors are educators of nutrition, detoxification and can guide you in appropriate exercises while awaiting the arrival of your new bundle. The total body approach is essential in created an energetic, feeling good new mama who is ready to interact with her new family.

Many of you know that I am an advocate of going barefoot whenever possible.    Studies show that a barefoot childhood will result in fewer instances of deformed toes, greater foot flexibility, stronger foot muscles, greater agility, better hip circumduction and more flexibility of the gluteal and hamstring muscles and greater ability to touch their toes.

When you go barefoot, you stand more upright and posture improves.  Since the foot and the spine contain the most proprioceptive sensory receptors, natural unrestricted movement of the feet is vital for overall neurological well-being.  These factors have lifelong consequences for a healthy, functional nervous system.

Adults who go barefoot have naturally shaped feet, straighter toes, free of corns, hammer toes, bunions and calluses, well-shaped legs resulting from a natural and balanced gait, a more natural motion, free of the wight brought on by shoes, prevention of blisters , ingrown toenails and plantar warts.

Barefoot running and exercise is becoming a growing practice showing better performance, less ankle sprains, less plantar fasciitis and less lower back disc problems due to more of a natural motion and foot awareness.  Many top companies are trying to produce shoes that can emulate the bare foot such as Nike "free" and Merrill.    Going barefoot, your feet and legs tire less, circulation is better and endurance is increased.

In addition; going barefoot is an additional remedy to varicose veins, slipped disc and athletes foot.   Kids should go barefoot as often as possible, yes even with "flat feet" .  You want to develop the muscles of the feet which will hold you for the rest of your life.  Beach walking is an excellent exercise done barefoot as is Yoga and Martial arts which are always done barefoot.  If you have been a shoe person all your life, you will have to start slow to develop all those muscles again.  Start by wearing none in the house and when stretching.

When you come in for your adjustments, be sure to kick off your shoes.  I will check your feet as the alignment of the foot is the beginning of the chain.  If your feet are off, you can be sure that the rest of the spinal alignment above will follow, decreasing the whole bodies over all pe.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this case study as I have observed facial asymmetry as well as asymmetry of the skull following birth many times in my 15 years in family practice.  Ususally the parents come in extremely concerned and fighting the option of putting a sort of "molding helmet" on the childs head for long periods of time during the day. Another aspect with facial asymmetry is to make sure the jaw is aligned.  A symptom of this would be difficulty in nursing.  Similarly, misalignments in the upper cervicals may make it difficult for the child to nurse from both sides of the body, as in a limitation of turning its head both right and left.   It is important to have these asymmetrys checked of course, as well as the size of the head.  But I myself have never had a case not clear up with adjustments of the spine and cranium ,   As well as manipulation of the musculature.  Enjoy the case study below.

Catherine Généreux DC Bio & Joel Alcantara DC Bio

Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic ~ Volume 2011 ~ Issue 1 ~ Pages 35-39    Abstract

Introduction: To present the chiropractic care of a patient with facial asymmetry concomitant with vertebral subluxations.

Clinical Features:  A four day old male presented with a facial asymmetry sustained at birth.  Additional complaints included constipation, hypersalivation, and intestinal gas.  Objective indicators of vertebral subluxation were identified via motion palpation and cranial examination.  Infant reflexes were unremarkable.

Intervention & Outcomes: Logan Basic, Diversified, and Active Release were the techniques utilized over the course of care to reduce vertebral subluxations.   The parents were given instructions on how to provide daily muscular treatments at home.  The home regimen included soft-tissue massage, cranial massage, and inversion therapy.

Conclusion: The case of a four day old male with a history of facial asymmetry, constipation, hypersalivation, and intestinal gas is presented. Dramatic improvement in facial asymmetry is noted following the introduction of chiropractic care concomitant with a reduction in vertebral subluxation. Improvements were also observed with the patient's additional complaints.  Further research is warranted to determine the benefits of chiropractic intervention.

I have been adjusting children for over 15 years now.  The quickest and easiest fix has always been in the case of recurrent ear infections.  Once you start adjusting one of these children on a regular basis and instruct the parent on some natural food remedies, it is quite easy to erradicate the recurrent ear infections.   The truth is that once you start adjusting the child, the immune system is brought to life and most recurrent illness are easily eliminated.

Improvements in Hearing, Speech, Development, and Behavior Following Chiropractic in a 4 Year Old Male

Ryan Pilsner, D.C. & Megan Richardson, D.C.

Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic ~ Volume 2011 ~ Issue 1 ~ Pages 14-22    Abstract

Objective: To review improvement in a child with otitis media, adenoid hypertrophy, nasal congestion, and hearing loss associated with speech difficulties, developmental delay, and behavioral concerns undergoing chiropractic care.

Clinical Features: A 4 year-old male presented with complaints of otitis media with effusion, adenoid hypertrophy, nasal congestion, bilateral hearing loss, speech difficulties, developmental delay, and behavioral concerns. Vertebral subluxations were found at upper cervical and upper thoracic vertebral levels.

Intervention and Outcomes: After 11 chiropractic adjustments including instrument and diversified techniques patient’s re-evaluation with ENT physician revealed resolution of otitis media with effusion, adenoid hypertrophy, nasal congestion, hearing loss and improvement of speech, development, and behavior. Patient had improved intervertebral motion in the upper cervical and upper thoracic spine.

Conclusions:  This case report presents supporting evidence that chiropractic adjustments may improve immune system functioning, thus relieving otitis media, adenoid hypertrophy, nasal congestion and their subsequent effects. More research is recommended to support the findings presented in this paper and to examine the role vertebral subluxation has on immune function.

The above words probably caught the attention of a lot of you.  If you are experiencing these problems, chiropractic can help.  In this case, restoring proper kinesiological and neurological function by reducing vertebral subluxation(spinal misalignment) restored proper afferent stimulation of the autonomic nervous system resulting in a reduction of symptoms.  Many times I find that it is a combination of improper cervical (neck) structure as well as nutritional deficencies.  If anyone in your family or friendly circle is experiencing these problems, i would be happy to have a look at them.  Please read the short abstract below. Improvement in a Child with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Constipation, and Deformational Plagiocephaly Undergoing Chiropractic Care

Robin Swaminathan, D.C. Bio & Laura Hanson, D.C., D.I.C.C.P. Bio

Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic ~ Volume 2011 ~ Issue 1 ~ Pages 9-13    Abstract

Objective: The chiropractic management of an infant with of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), constipation and deformational plagiocephaly is described.

Clinical Features: A 5-month-old female presented for care with complaints of GERD since birth and constipation since she was 4-6 weeks old. At the time of initial presentation medication was not affecting frequency or amount of reflux symptoms. Bilateral flattening of the occiput was noted indicating deformational plagiocephaly.

Intervention and Outcomes: The patient was seen 19 times over approximately 6 months for chiropractic evaluation and management. Chiropractic adjustments included atlas, T2, L4, sacrum and the cranial vault. At the time of a 6-month care reassessment, the patient had ceased taking anti-reflux medication and was regularly having 1 to 2 bowel movements per day. The patient’s plagiocephaly was improved with only slight leveling of the occiput noted.

Conclusions:  In this case, restoring proper kinesiological and neurological function by reducing vertebral subluxation restored proper afferent stimulation of the autonomic nervous system resulting in a concomitant reduction in subluxation findings, deformational plagiocephaly and visceral dysfunction.

  • The truth? Get your butt off the couch, stop making excuses.  Start to take care of yourselves.  Are you getting your spine aligned regularly so that your body is working properly?  What are you putting into your bodies these days, is it nutritious?  How about your thoughts, what you think is what you believe and ultimately what you think is what you are.  Are you working out?  Are you getting enough sleep?  Stressed out? Toxic?  The less you do for yourself, the more you must rely on the above medicines.  The stronger your body is the better the capacity to heal. Enroll in a health class.  Get yourself in a great motivating program, go see a chiropractor who will align you, teach you about nutrition, detoxifying, and exercise.  We chiropractors are trained in life, vitality, and how to keep life; rather than medicine which is reliant on symptom modification.  Its a new year, start it right, get on a health kick.

I have seen many children in my 14 years of practice have symptoms of night time bed wetting have resolution of the condition once they have been under chiropractic care.  The problem tends to be a functional one, meaning pressure on the nervous system causing the body to work improperly.  Once the body is balanced, pressure is removed from the area and begins to work properly.

    Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic ~ Volume 2010 ~ Issue 4 ~ Pages 143 -149   Abstract

Objective:To describe successful chiropractic care of a pediatric patient with nocturnal enuresis.
Clinical Features: A nine year old boy with nocturnal enuresis was presented for chiropractic care after unsuccessful medical approaches. Visual examination revealed several postural abnormalities.  Motion palpation revealed vertebral subluxations in the cervical and lumbosacral spine regions.

Interventions and Outcomes:The patient was cared for with contact specific, high velocity, low-amplitude type thrust to sites of spinal subluxations.  Proper dietary modifications were implemented as indicated from the patient’s 7-day dietary intake form.  By the seventh visit, it was reported that the patient had been enuresis free for two weeks which continued to be the case at a four month follow up; which deemed resolution of nocturnal enuresis.

Conclusion:The case of a nine year old male with past history of nocturnal enuresis is presented. Dramatic improvement is noted following the introduction of chiropractic care concomitant with a reduction in vertebral subluxation. Additional research on the benefits of chiropractic care and nocturnal enuresis is warranted.
